Fox Cubs

It was a cold day,
the kind of cold only clear
weather brings.
that hardens the earth
and makes life scarce.

There was something ignoble
about the hunk of granite
we heaped over the little grave
to save the grey flesh beneath
from sustaining the fox cubs
whose gaunt mother
prowled the encampment.
